Citizen ParaWater was launched in 1959 and it was great invention and well-known since it was the first Japanese water-resistant wristwatch. In other word, before this there were no water-resistant wristwatch before the “ParaWater”. ParaWater has been also the great grandfather for all citizen diver in later years. Though it was not for diving, but it could be used at least for shallow swimming activities. In order to be water resistant, Citizen ParaWater watch will have the special design tube and crown assembly plus the use of rubber gaskets on the crown for added seal on the water resistance. These was designed after a lot of research in designing water resistance watch.
In order to proof to the public, Citizen ParaWater had been completed two trans-pacific tests and one in the Sea of Japan and they achieve a great result. The notation “ParaWater” had been used for all Citizen water resistance wristwatch from that period till early 1970 when Citizen has started to change the notation to “Water Resistant” in order to meet the requirements since Citizen has been exporting more watches since 1970s.
In the earlier generation of Citizen ParaWater, most of the Citizen automatic watches were still using unique Citizen caliber with jet rotor. This was the first Citizen caliber for automatic movements. Few years later in 1963, Citizen had introduced new automatic movement with new swinging rotor type design that come with either non-date or date complications. Non-date movement was referred to “Uni Auto” with only plain dial whereby the one with date window was referred to as “Uni Auto Dater”. These calibers come with 17 and 19 jewels variant. The movement numbers are respectively referred to as 1400 and 2400.
Citizen Auto Dater Uni has a unique logo design and it was not the usual Citizen logo. It has round circle with triangle poking from the top. It is not clear what is the meaning of “Uni” nomenclature. “Auto Dater” itself is very clearly described as an automatic movement with date complication.
There were a lot of dial variants been produced under Citizen Auto Dater Uni ParaWater. Each of them has a unique design dial, which in my own opinion will be the jaw-dropper for vintage watch collectors. One of the well-known Auto Dater Uni ParaWater is reference ADUS31201-T, which was the shallow diver watch that used 1960’s era compressor style case with dual crown setup and contrasting inner bezel insert. This reference was produced in 1965 and it was direct competitor to the famous Seiko Silverwave. Another successor is the reference AU140801, which is more to the field watch. This watch has a glossy black dial with “Ridiculous” big luminous filled indexes. This dial design was more suitable for the military field watch style. Both references are extremely difficult to find nowadays and especially come in good working condition and genuine “Unmolested” dial.
Discussing about unique dial variants on Citizen Auto Dater Uni, there is another variant that has the same rarity as above mentioned two references. The current example of Citizen Auto Dater Uni here come with full vibrant luminous dial. The dial color is greenish, and it will glow in low light condition. Even it was still glowing today however only for short time period. This dial variant has been so far the most unique design dial ever produced by Citizen in the past and so far, this was the only one seen for vintage Citizen watches. Surprisingly the condition of the luminous dial has been still preserved clean and there is no aging deterioration seen. The black Italic bold font printed notation are still preserved very crisp and super clear as well.
